"In Dublin, newly promoted detective inspector Joe Swallow's life looks to be taking a turn for the better. In addition to his promotion, he's settled into a comfortable arrangement with his landlady and paramour, Maria Walsh--that is, until his newfound peace is chaotically uprooted when a series of violent attacks against women lead to an outbreak of panic and fear. Swallow is drawn into the chase for a vicious serial murderer down Dublin's dark alleys, and things on the home front are about to change in an unexpected way"--From publisher description.

Joe Swallow's promotion seems to have given him closer and more settled relationships both on the domestic front and with his boss, John Mallow. In both cases, he is more of a partner than his former uncommitted and somewhat resentful participant in events. The conversations that Swallow, John Mallow and Sgt. Mossop, have with superiors whose actions are inappropriate and could likely get all three fired are brilliant examples of well-reasoned legal and ethical arguments. Although the good guys do not always win, and the ending is somewhat open as to where the next book will take up the story, the police procedures and the characters are well drawn and the story is gripping to the end.
