Interesting world-building and great characters. Sydney - clever, talented, and the smartest one in the room - had me rooting for her from the start.

I LOVED the world behind this book and the central conflict. What I didn't particularly enjoy was the Mary Sue aspect of the main character. The fact that she was able to perform massive feats of magic to fit the plot was frustrating - as was the speed of the novel's resolution. The plot moved steadily until the last 30 pages where we whipped to the finish line. I wish this book was a duology or trilogy so we could learn more about this world.

While I enjoyed this book, I did have a difficult time getting into it. The author has chosen not give a lot of context or background to her world building, which I can respect - I don't always want to be spoon fed by the author. However, the world she's built is detailed and nuanced, and it took me a while to be immersed and understand the context the characters live within. Additionally, the story felt over-stuffed with characters and personal motivations. For example, I think the characters of Madison and Harper could have easily collapsed into one, without missing anything from the story. Overall, a good revenge thriller read, with a protagonist I ended up really caring for.

Loved this book. The pacing was spot on (I didn't find it too fast at all). Enjoyed the characters and world building. If you like Urban Fantasy give it a shot.

I lost interest in this book in the first a hundred pages. Like other users I thought it could have benefited a great deal if it was slower paced and did a better job establishing characters. I just didn't feel like the conflict was compelling enough neither was the world building. It just felt...shallow.

This was really a fun, creative book with good characters and an interesting plot. A journey into shadows. One of the better fantasy books that I've read recently.

I loved this book. It resonated so strongly with me. Couldn't stop reading (yes--it's very fast paced! but I think of it more as lean. no wasted scenes) and the big cast meant we saw a variety of strong women wielding power in a variety of ways. Howard didn't pull any punches with the plot, either; just because it's fast paced doesn't mean it's shallow--there is real grief and loss here.

A lot of potential in the story and characters but it would have benefitted from being paced a little slower, maybe over two books even.
