Hitchcock apparently considered this film to be a flop. I agree, having found it to be long and dull and not terribly interesting. I only got halfway through. In addition, I really disliked having Joseph Cotton playing someone supposedly from either Ireland or the UK or something. What kind of accent was that?

This is a 1949 British historical thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on the novel of the same name published in 1937 by Helen Simpson.
Set in colonial Sydney, New South Wales, Australia during the early 19th century, it is a mystery involving a love triangle with a "wrong man" scenario, a sinister housekeeper, class conflict, and very high levels of emotional tension, both on the surface and underneath.
Although it is an interesting story, the heroine talks too much to reveal the secret, instead of the director showing it.
