The swimming pool is just that way. And make sure you go through the disinfectant pool. We don't want any verrucas.

Keep upwind if I were you. Four weeks in the drink makes for a very slippery customer. This one's as ripe and runny as a rancid Roquefort.

The name of the fly. There are more vulgar appellations.
- Such as? –
The Vicar's Bitch, for one. Legend has it the fly was fashioned using hairs from a cleric's Labrador.
- Why eccentric?
You can take trout on it, but traditionally it's a salmon fly. No salmon in this neck of the woods. No salmon in any of the rivers in Oxford.

Don't be deceived. He hides it well, but Morse is the cleverest man in Oxford.
-Oh! I'm cut to the quick.
Second-cleverest, then, now you're here.

It's always sex with the police, isn't it? A girl can't just be friends with a chap. It's has to be sex.
-Or love. In my experience, as many kill for love as desire.

(Trewlove:) Actually, it's pretty evenly poised, sir.
- Oh, is it? You play a little, Officer?
Oh, I used to, sir. At school, for my house.
-Ah, well, I'm sure we all played at school.
The opening appears to have been the Kronsteen variation of the Queen's Gambit declined. Black sacrificed material for positional advantage. The question now is whether he's prepared to accept the exchange of knights in a bid to develop the centre.
-Yes, of course. I didn't mean Four five six from Information Room.
(Thursday:) More to my officers than a - Pretty face?

Last Wednesday evening, we saw a programme and it was the dirtiest programme I've ever seen. … We object to the disbelief, the doubt and the dirt that the BBC pours into millions of homes through the television screen and through the wireless!

You've smoked pot? When?
-Up the desert. They called it kif out there. Some of the lads were silly with it. You ever tried it?
I'm a serving police officer. Besides, I like to keep a clear head.
- Put enough beer away.
Beer's brain food.
There was this programme last week, and it was the dirtiest programme I have ever seen!
- Dirty?
Well, it was.
-What do you mean? The people in it hadn't had a wash?
You know very well what I mean.
-I don't. Honestly. What's dirty?
What's dirty? Dirty's dirty. That's what dirty is.
-But what's dirty to you might be quite acceptable to somebody else. Quite normal, in fact.
This wasn't normal. It made me physically sick.
-What was wrong with it, then? It was about two of these so-called homosexuals.
How do you mean "so-called"? The Good Book has a different name for them.
- Has it? Well, what's that, then?

The only thing I have waiting for me at my flat is Wagner.
- That's sad.
There are worse things.
- Are there? I can't think of any. I know what it's like to be lonely.
I'm not particularly.
- Really? You seem lonely.

He has your best interests at heart.
-Hides it well.
That's because he's a lot smarter than you give him credit for.

Me and Chris used to look for mushrooms after school. You ever tried 'em?
- Only as part of an English breakfast. So what do you expect to find beyond the door?
The infinite. Infinite possibility. Infinite love. We're all just angels that fell from grace. Every one of us. There is no shame. No guilt. Everyone vibrating at the same frequency as the universe.

And you, Morse? What have you accomplished?
-Not so much, I don't suppose, by comparison. Well, if you need any assistance, then I'd certainly like to help. Here's my card. My home number's on the back.
Well, I'm sure that won't be necessary. Well, if you can think of anything. A policeman?
-A detective.

Doctors and nurses? It all seems lovely in some silly paperback, but in real life, these things can go awfully wrong

I imagine you think that was a bit harsh. But discipline in a hospital is a matter of life and death.

Don't fool yourself. You might have a nice house and sit on the bowls club committee, but when it comes down to it, we're just two cheeks on the same arse.

And have you spoken to Susan?
- Of course. I haven't mentioned you. No.
Well, I didn't think you would.

I'll see you back at the nick.

Edgar was always very decent to me.
-Well, he always had a weakness for failures. The Assistant Chief Constable was a golfing friend of Edgar's. I asked him about you. And he said that you'd never amount to much. You didn't even pass your ____ (Intentional left blank.)

And it will it will never be enough to make it right, but God knows I have paid for that.
-You paid for nothing.

*** Spoiler Alert ***
We were lucky she came clean. Why did she, do you think?
-Maybe she needed to prove to herself that she wasn't wholly lost.
Well, she'll never breathe free air again.
-Nor should she. People shouldn't get away with things.
She had that right, at least.
-That's our business, nobody else's.
Hell of a price to pay.
-It was the dead that paid the price, not her. Hell of a responsibility, though. The power of life and death.
Well, you've power over ham and tomato.

Better to die under an open sky than prison. Some men aren't born for walls.
The world will take what happens here as a warning and step back from the brink.
-Maybe. But people will still die. Old, young, men, women and children. All of them loved by someone. The same as you loved your wife, the same as I love mine.

The Soviet Union has warned the United States that an attack on Cuba or on Soviet ships carrying supplies to the island would mean war. In a statement from Moscow, the Russian Foreign Minister Mr. Gromyko said any such attack made by the United States would plunge the world into the disaster of a universal world war with the use of thermonuclear weapons.

Hey! How was your day?
-Well, it was an endless social whirl. You'll read all about it in next month's Harper's.
If you want to meet people, you've got to go to the village. You've got to talk to them.
-I don't like the way some of them look at me.

*** Spoiler Alert ***
How's Mum?
-Half out of her mind with worry. You could have called just to set her mind at rest.
I couldn't. She'd have got around me.
- Would that have been the end of the world?
See? That's why I had to go. If I come home, what then? Back to the nine to five? Tea in front of the telly, the Saturday dates with some nice boy who won't try and put his hand up my skirt. … Is that what you want me to be? The engagement party, Uncle Charlie's blue jokes at the wedding, two-up two-down on some new estate, every house the same, with a pram in the hall?
-Why not? We'd have been glad of something like that, your mother and me. You're too young to remember but our first two years of married life after I'd come back from the war, we lived with your nan and granddad over the ironmonger's. Moved into the prefab, we thought we'd won the pools.
I'm not you and Mum. And it's not your life, it's mine.

All four stories are very good. Detective puzzlers are the theme of course. Acting is excellent for all the major roles. There's a bit of a problem with the cinematography. It seems the production company has laid their hands on some kind of vdo gadget that allows weird camera angles and dynamic motion of the camera without much bother to the film crew. SteadyCam I think they call it. The result is sort of like when amateur film buffs fell in love w/ those zoom cameras. Remember that? Every scene would have the zoom going full out, full back several times. Made you dizzy to watch. Same sort of thing w/Endeavour Season 4. Let's just say that the cinematography is overdone and over-produced. They'd be better off to keep the camera's still, and let the characters do the moving around. Besides that, good stories, great acting, recommended.

There are 4 very short interviews with Shaun Evans on Disc 2. I would highly recommend viewing them before watching Series 4. He doesn't give spoilers, however, he does give the viewer an overall picture of the episodes. It made the second viewing a lot more fun for me. The show is currently into series 6 in the UK.

As prior seasons, less about the cases but the personal tribulations and camaraderie of Morse and the brain trust at Oxford City Police. S4 revealed more insights into his destined solitary future.

Note: Introduced in S3, WPC Shirley Trewlove continued to shine with her brain, more than a pretty face. One of her unexpected quotes: The opening appears to have been the Kronsteen variation of the Queen's Gambit declined. Black sacrificed material for positional advantage. The question now is whether he's prepared to accept the exchange of knights in a bid to develop the centre.

This series deserves the title "Masterpiece" in every way. A real class act.
