Ruso wanders through this Medicus installment interviewing people and collecting information, thus giving us clues as to who the suspects are. Several of the characters are not terribly personable, including Valens, the main suspect in his wife's death. Tilla keeps the victim, Serena, and the readers informed of developments. She even uses her medical skills to stitch Ruso back together and rescue Pertinax. They finally get everyone sorted out, but where will they go next? Back to Tilla's family farm? Ruso finds himself longing to be there, oddly enough, thanks to the various injuries and indignities he sustains in the course of finding the murderer. Near death experiences can make a person wish for a peaceful life, even if it involves goats and haystacks. As usual the historical veracity and portrayal of the main characters are first rate and make for a fun read and a challenging mystery.
