A religion-based autocracy has taken over most of the United States, renaming the country Gilead. In this country women are second-class citizens. Anyone trying to escape is punished. One such person is June, who is captured while trying to escape with her husband and child and is sentenced to be a handmaid, bearing children for childless government officials. As a handmaid, June is renamed Offred. This is her story.

Very well done. It's dark, but not as much as I expected (in a good way); I thought it'd be too heavy with all the violence to women, among other things, but it's emotionally balanced such that there always seems to be a window for hope. The storytelling and acting is spot on--in line with the tone and details of the book--and the cinematography is gorgeous. The screenwriter and director also seemed to think of all the extra details the book doesn't go into that I wondered about as a reader, bringing the world vividly to life.

I love this series! It's dark, disturbing, relevant and thrilling. The actors are given enough time in each shot to convey complex emotional reactions. While intense, there are lots of quiet moments and long shots that really draw you in to the story.

A somber, moody drama about an oppressive, dystopian future. Given its critical acclaim and awards, I was somewhat underwhelmed. The story is well depicted in the original 1990 film, so the endless flashbacks & protracted scenes of emotional pathos seemed like non-essential filler. It's a cautionary tale better explored by movies like "1984" and "V." Not bad, but its snail's pace really didn't hold my interest.

At last, a tv show from North America. Adapted from the novel of Margaret Atwood. Shot in the parks and subway at Toronto.

I found the Handmaid's Tale to be very well acted but scary in lots of ways, kept me on the edge of my seat. I think if we Americans don't vote on some of the issues and people running the US, this could very well happen. Can't wait to see what happens in Season 2

I finally read the book, so I was curious about the tv series. THE HANDMAID’S TALE, SEASON 1 is an absorbing and disturbing adaptation of the dystopian classic. While it departs from the novel in many ways, it’s easy to see why Season 1 garnered so many awards and nominations for acting, directing, writing, cinematography, and production. Author Margaret Atwood is a contributing producer, and she even has a cameo in the first episode. It’ll be interesting to find out where the series takes its characters in Season 2. Caution: Not for children or the squeamish; very strong adult themes & language.

The Handmaid’s Tale is an amazing TV series about a woman named June/Offred who has to adjust to a very cruel and strict society. She is one of the very few women left in the world that are able to have children and because of this, she is kidnapped and is sent to a home that will use her body to have a baby. It is very dark at times, but a huge theme in the series is love. June’s main mission is to find her daughter who was separated from her and I find it is a beautiful storyline about a mother that will not give up no matter the possible consequences. I absolutely love this show as it is so suspenseful and unpredictable, you never know what is going to happen next. I also enjoy watching it as it is filmed in mostly Hamilton, Cambridge and Toronto and it is cool being able to see places that are familiar. In fact, the house Offred stays at is just on the corner of Aberdeen Ave. and Bay St. in Hamilton! This show can be hard to watch at times and it does have inappropriate content for kids, so I would say this show is more for a mature audience. I rate “The Handmaids Tale” 5/5 stars. @KyKy18 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
