Prioress Eleanor, Brother Thomas and Sister Anne arrive at Mynchen Buckland, a priory of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem (For more about this order, read the interesting Author's Note at the end, which has a bibliography as well.) to find an unsettling situation. They are obviously not welcome. Prioress Amicia, who they have promised to see, has been arrested, and everyone seems to have something they feel guilty about. It's clear that the attendants they have been given are spies. Prioress Amicia asks them to prove her innocent of the charge of murder. It takes some deviousness for the three of them to even talk together. When a second murder occurs, and other misdeeds are uncovered, suddenly there are guilty parties and confessions everywhere; but they are not guilty of murder. The killer has been hiding in plain sight. Royal's research on the time gives this mystery and it's characters a very authentic background.
