Fresh, accessible, and inspiring, Shaking Things Up introduces fourteen revolutionary young women--each paired with a noteworthy female artist--to the next generation of activists, trail-blazers, and rabble-rousers. From the award-winning author of Ada's Violin, Susan Hood, this is a poetic and visual celebration of persistent women throughout history. In this book, you will find Mary Anning, who was just thirteen when she unearthed a prehistoric fossil. You'll meet Ruby Bridges, the brave six-year-old who helped end segregation in the South. And Maya Lin, who at twenty-one won a competition to create a war memorial, and then had to appear before Congress to defend her right to create. And those are just a few of the young women included in this book. Readers will also hear about Molly Williams, Annette Kellerman, Nellie Bly, Pura Belprè, Frida Kahlo, Jacqueline and Eileen Nearne, Frances Moore Lappè, Mae Jemison, Angela Zhang, and Malala Yousafzai--all whose stories will enthrall and inspire. This book was written, illustrated, edited, and designed by women and includes an author's note, a timeline, and additional resources. With artwork by notable artists including Selina Alko, Sophie Blackall, Lisa Brown, Hadley Hooper, Emily Winfield Martin, Oge Mora, Julie Morstad, Sara Palacios, LeUyen Pham, Erin Robinson, Isabel Roxas, Shadra Strickland, and Melissa Sweet. -- Amazon.com.

One of my favorite 2018 Children's poetry books! 14 amazing women - Meet Nellie Bly, Investigative Journalist, Pura Belpre, Children's Author and first Latina Librarian at New York Public Library or Maya Lin, Architect and Sculptor. Beautifully written poems with informative information. The illustrations are by 13 amazing illustrators! An fabulous timeline is located in the front of the book. Also, sources, books and website recommendations are located in the back of the book. A wonderful way to meet amazing women in poetry format. Especially, during the month of April.

Another great addition to the booming genre of children's books about women who blaze trails. In addition to great illustrations by 13 of the best female picture book artists working today, this book includes profiles of women who aren't necessarily household names, but should be.

Read poems about 14 amazing women from a variety of countries, races, and backgrounds who used their interests, talents, and passions to improve the world around them. Each one has their story told using a different style of poetry, making this a good choice for kids interested in poetry as well as history or women's issues.
