I think I read this 2 decades back, so treat this comment as possibly erroneous. __Some of his minutiae left me a little suspicious, like one of the anti Diem conspirators 'held up 2 fingers, to indicate both Diem and his brother were to die'. I would like to know how he found this out? The American Admin of the time had understood the Nho bro were to be spared, but they eluded capture for some days, having ducked down an escape tunnel, then onto Cho Lon. I guess the coup leaders were concerned they would mount some sort of a come back? __Karnow did get a Vietnamese woman's description of having an air delivered bomb explode beside her hut. It left her with a massive headache & cross eyed for the rest of the day. I don't know if this helped the American cause at all.

While a truly great book on the Vietnam War, it is not - despite the title - truly a history of Vietnam itself, although Karnow does briefly outline some of Vietnam's early history. Unlike other books on the war, Karnow takes the time to trace the deeper origins of the conflict right back to France's earliest attempts to extend its empire to the region. Having been in Vietnam during the US-Vietnam war, and covered the post-WWII French conflict from Paris, Karnow is extremely familiar with his topic, and makes a real effort to interview all sides.
