A love story about divorce. A marriage coming apart and a family coming together. A hilarious and harrowing, sharply observed, and deeply compassionate film from writer-director Noah Baumbach. Charlie is a charismatic New York theater director wedded to his work. Nicole is an actor who is ready to change her own life. Their hopes for an amicable divorce fade as they are drawn into a system that pits them against each other and forces them to redefine their relationship and their family.

I had heard this movie was good and got Oscar attention.
I found it boring. Nice ending though.

A good movie of the complexity of even a friendly divorce that develops into an ugly emotional fight motivated by "hungry" lawyers. Good acting but the movie could have been shorter.

Way too long considering it’s a movie about divorce and makes one depressed after watching.

In our fragmented society, a high Rotten Tomatoes score doesn't guarantee universal audience satisfaction. As here. If you love angsty character plotting between two anguished partners -- as opposed to something witty like Destination Wedding -- then you'll love Marriage Story. For the rest of us . . . .

Excellent film about a relationship in which the woman decides she is not an equal. The characters are well developed and beautifully acted. A serious film but there is considerable humour. And the characterization of the various lawyers is terrific. For those who like action, this is not the film for you.

Driver did a very good job singing:

Being Alive
Stephen Sondheim
Someone to hold me too close.
Someone to hurt me too deep.
Someone to sit in my chair,
And ruin my sleep,
And make me aware,
Of being alive.
Being alive.
Somebody need me too much.
Somebody know me too well.
Somebody pull me up short,
And put me through hell,
And give me support,
For being alive.
Make me alive.
Make me alive.
Make me confused.
Mock me with praise.
Let me be used.
Vary my days.
But alone,
Is alone,
Not alive.…

Nora Fanshaw: People don't accept mothers who drink too much wine and yell at their child and call him an asshole. I get it. I do it too. We can accept an imperfect dad. Let's face it, the idea of a good father was only invented like 30 years ago. Before that, fathers were expected to be silent and absent and unreliable and selfish, and can all say we want them to be different. But on some basic level, we accept them. We love them for their fallibilities, but people absolutely don't accept those same failings in mothers. We don't accept it structurally and we don't accept it spiritually.

Because the basis of our Judeo-Christian whatever is Mary, Mother of Jesus, and she's perfect. She's a virgin who gives birth, unwaveringly supports her child and holds his dead body when he's gone. And the dad isn't there. He didn't even do the fucking. God is in heaven. God is the father and God didn't show up. So, you have to be perfect, and Charlie can be a fuck up and it doesn't matter. You will always be held to a different, higher standard. And it's fucked up, but that's the way it is.
