I remember staying up till 2AM to read this book before getting up for school. This mini series was a good adaptation of the book. Builds slowly. There is a newer version that is a okay, but this is more true to the book. The master vampire was not portrayed as in the book, but James Mason as his familiar was very good. Lance Kerwin the teenage heart throb of the late 70's was excellent as Mark, as was David Soul in his role as Ben Mears. Enjoyed seeing this again.

From the first wave of Stephen King adaptations, "Salem's Lot" was a a television mini-series released in 1979. Author David Soul (Hutch from "Starsky and Hutch") returns to his small New England town to find strange things are afoot. Strange like vampires! The evil in a small town theme would resurface in a later King adaptation, "Needful Things." James Mason plays a mysterious antiques dealer and Bonnie Bedelia co-stars. The mini-series format allows the film to take its time (it can be a little slow) and slowly build tension in a way a 2-hour film couldn't. The vampire design is heavily influenced by the classic German film "Nosferatu." Directed by Tobe Hooper ("Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "Poltergeist"). Unjustly overshadowed by the other King adaptations of the period ("The Shining," "Cujo," "Carrie").
