Boring movie, lost interest mid-way, fast fowarded some parts, decided it was a waste of time. I have never done that with any movie until this one. Ugh.

Believe there is more to this movie than meets the eye. Amazing how the lack of intelligent human life (politics, emotional outburst WITHOUT considered reason, etc.) on this planet was very well displayed!

An excellent sci-fi story bogged down by melodrama and a woman trying to reconnect with her father through her work. I felt like if they trimmed 15 minutes it would make for a much better film. Jodie Foster is an excellent actress, but maybe she wasn't the right person for the part.

Excellent film
Intense, powerful, realistic
Great stellar acting, story, dialouge, topics, filming

Men / women / politics / power
Fear of unknown, stealing credit, humility, passion, dreams, interest, faith, life long pursuit

True to self

Young girl is allowed to explore her love of "contact" to use an old fashioned cb radio (already ahead of its time at the time) by her dad. She loves the idea of space, contact, connection to things beyond the eye and imagination. Her mom dies in childbirth, so she is kind of trying to contact her in space...

Dad dies as well. She has questions about life, death, spirituality, she pursues a career of space exploration through sound, despite powerful sexism and glass ceilings in the field . She is relentless in her belief that there are others in space we can communicate with. She is continuously listening, and discovered sound from space that is verified world wide. It is communication and has visial proof and plans for a machine.

A very rich man helps her with financing and interpreting these plans.
The government and all its circus, sexism and power plays, along with the media get involved. They demote her from her own project. They assign another person who has held her back her whooe career, to take her place as lead.

She ends up meeting and having an encounter with other life, and is not able to prove (faith) her experience to others. The love of her life believes her, though.

"Rolling with the punches"

This movie covers all the best parts of a drama, love story, sci fi, political movie, adventure, inspirational, motivational, universal questions of faith and humanity...

Well worth watching

Saw it in the theater when it first came out, and it is still great and just as relevant , even more so, today!

Garbage. Follywood PC style, of course.
Zemeckis, the creator of some of the best films ever made, really tanked with this one.

Just ok, was a little bored with it to be honest.

This film is far better than the book, with its bulky, 12-member space-exploration crew. (Dr. Sagan was a great science popularizer, but not also a great novelist.) Some may fidget at the slow pace, but since "2001" this has been a useful film device to symbolize the vast emptiness of space. There is a bit too much of "Dr. Strangelove" in the reactions of the national-security people--for one, James Wood comes off as a total jerk (in his case, art imitating life)--but this is more than overcome by the inquisitive young Ellie (Jena Malone) and even more so by the persistent mature Ellie (the always-great Jodie).

People who didn't give this movie 5 stars truly did not understand it. This has got to be one of the best sci-fi/mystery/alien/fantasy movies that has come out in a long time. If you love sci-fi this movie is must see! Enjoy

Alien: You're an interesting species. An interesting mix. You're capable of such beautiful dreams, and such horrible nightmares. You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone, only you're not. See, in all our searching, the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable, is each other.

Young Ellie: Dad, do you think there's people on other planets? Ted Arroway: I don't know, Sparks. But I guess I'd say... if it is just us... seems like an awful waste of space.

Executive: We must confess that your proposal seems less like science and more like science fiction. Ellie Arroway: Science fiction. Well you're right, it's crazy. In fact, it's even worse than that, nuts. You wanna hear something really nutty? I heard of a couple guys who wanna build something called an "airplane," you know you get people to go in, and fly around like birds, it's ridiculous, right? And what about breaking the sound barrier, or rockets to the moon, or atomic energy, or a mission to Mars? Science fiction, right? Look, all I'm asking, is for you to just have the tiniest bit of vision. You know, to just step back for one minute and look at the big picture. To take a chance on something that just might end up being the most profoundly impactful moment for humanity, for the history... of history.

S.R. Hadden (to Ellie): They still want an American to go, Doctor. Wanna take a ride?

Michael Kitz: ...why don't you simply withdraw your testimony, and concede that this "journey to the center of the galaxy," in fact, NEVER TOOK PLACE! Ellie Arroway: Because I can't. I... had an experience... I can't prove it, I can't even explain it, but everything that I know as a human being, everything that I am tells me that it was real! I was given something wonderful, something that changed me forever... A vision... of the universe, that tells us, undeniably, how tiny, and insignificant and how... rare, and precious we all are! A vision that tells us that we belong to something that is greater then ourselves, that we are NOT, that none of us are alone! I wish... I... could share that... I wish, that everyone, if only for one... moment, could feel... that awe, and humility, and hope. But... That continues to be my wish.
