This book was completely unnecessary. It was completely, unabashedly ,unadulterated filler and fluff. Any advancement the characters made in the first book were erased by this angst ridden mess. Had Cass been smart and not gone for the trilogy money-grab, she could have made this a concise dualogy. America was back and forth between Aspen and Maxon, and was way more confused than any girl could have or should have been in this situation. I understand that she's 17, but I had a much better grasp on my emotions and love life than this poor confused girl with the ridiculous name. The only two scenes worth mentioning here were the discovery of Illea's diary and the following Halloween ball, and Marlee's and Woodward's affair and punishment. These could have easily been fit into the first or the last novels, and this book done away with entirely. We end the book with America's feelings being exactly the same as when she started. There's no growth. It reminds me of an Anime movie that corresponds with an ongoing series. It's a side story, the characters go through some hardships, overcome them, and we end just the same as it began- with zero romance changes, zero character growth, and nothing to add to the overall story arc. This book was a giant Cha-cha. I seriously hope the last will be better. I'm actually getting used to Amy Rubinate's voice (I'm listening to it on audiobook). She sounds like a robot. So, hardly any redeeming qualities to this book. On to the last.
