Divergent takes place in a society split into five factions. Tris is born in the Abnegation faction, the faction focused on selflessness and helping others. However, when the time comes to choose her new faction, she opts to transfer to Dauntless, the faction of bravery. When taking tests to help her decide her faction, she learned that she is divergent, meaning she shows traits of multiple factions. Tris quickly learns what a danger this is and that people are willing to kill her for this. As she attempts to hide her secret, she must adjust to her new life, making new friends and learning what it means to be dauntless. The most interesting part of the book is how Tris’s character is developed. When she first arrived in Dauntless, she was the only transfer from Abnegation, and she was made fun of for this. However, she dealt with this and adjusted to the new rules of life. The pace of the story is also very fast, and you will never know what is coming next. This book follows the same basic story as The Hunger Games, as there is a disrespected girl who fights hard to earn respect. Overall, the theme is a bit repetitive, but it is definitely a book to try out.
