I put off reading this for a long time because I was concerned about its obvious similarities to The Hunger Games (which was released first). But, I remembered hearing a good review and interview with the author on NPR, so thought I'd give it a shot. What a waste of 10+ hours! It was everything I feared and more. Not only was it too similar in plot basics (near-future US, post some sort of vague, never explained, civil-type war where an area of the country is divided into factions. The plot holes can accommodate a Mack truck. The world-building is a rough sketch, with so little thought as to how this simplistically designed society could really function that I can't believe even an intelligent high schooler wouldn't question its logic. The protagonist is pure YA formula and unlikeable for the majority of the book. The only distinction is that the "love triangle" involves only one hot guy; the other is not up to par. I could go on, but honestly, it's not worth my time. I know this book and the subsequent trilogy was a best seller and adored by teenage girls (and probably more than a few young and not-so-young women everywhere, but it's not for me.
