When Alice’s favorite aunt, Polly Portman baker extraordinaire, dies, she is heartbroken. The rest of the town wonders what will become of them, now that their claim to fame and tourists is gone. Aunt Polly was the 13 time winner of the Blueberry Medal for the country’s best pie. And she left her crust recipe to her mean, chubby, old cat Lardo, and she left Lardo to Alice. Alice’s mom is very angry at being left out of the will, and wants nothing to do with the cat. Against her parents’ wishes, Alice keeps the cat. Meanwhile, the search is on for the recipe. People all over town are baking in the hope of recreating the recipe. Someone breaks into Aunt Polly’s shop, and then Lardo is kidnapped. Alice and her friend Charlie set out to solve the mystery and find Lardo. If you like mysteries or cooking you’ll want to read this fun book. Each chapter starts with a pie recipe. ~Alexa Newman, Youth Services Librarian
