This is an adaptation of the classic Chinese novel, The Dream of the Red Chamber, which was written during the Qing Dynasty (mid-18th c.). This is an extreme abbreviation and condensation of that novel, intended in part to draw the attention of Western audiences to the classic novel. Even still, I thought this book was very good; in fact I read it in less than two days. It draws the reader into the complicated world of imperial family politics and brings 18th c. China alive to the reader. Highly recommended.
