Jonas is an 11-year-old boy living in a dystopian future. In this future, there is no war and no suffering, but there are also no emotions or colors, and everything is controlled including who to marry and jobs. Jonas is at the age where he will receive his job, but to his surprise, he is given a crucial one, the Receiver of Memory. With this job, he is given special rules and receives memories from the old receiver now known as the Giver which unlocks emotions, colors, and many other things for him. Even with its very plain writing style, the Giver still has great imagery and symbolism including his brother Gabriel and the color red. As mentioned, the writing is rather plain making it pretty easy to understand, but beyond the literal meanings are deep messages which may be hard to find for some.
