For the third time, dipping into a series I read and enjoyed in the past resulted in a let down (previously experienced this with Jeffrey Deaver and Sue Grafton). Have I changed? The authors? I do not recall having such a negative reaction to the main character in Reich's series in the past. Brennan's derisive dismissal of some women (Pete's fiancee, the convenience store clerk) was completely at odds with her compassion for the victim of apparent hit and run. The examples of hyperbole were grating. The caricatures that were Slidell and Dew were lazy and disappointing. Nevertheless, I did begin to prioritize this one over the other two books to which I was listening (different books in different rooms). The epilogue was the best part, with data about human trafficking that brought tears to my eyes.
