: Good, character- driven middle school story. This novel includes plenty of “inner city” issues but they are displayed in contrast to the lives of more middle class students. The “soap opera” aspects of the novel are tempered by the engaging voice of Trevor, the seventh grade protagonist. There is humor in well- drawn sibling relationships. The text is broken up by notebook drawings and graffiti efforts. The combination of friendship issues and sports events makes it a good story for both boys and girls. Teachers and school administrators are portrayed as flawed, but well-intentioned. One special science teacher is the source of wordplay and inspiration. The best element of this novel is the well-drawn protagonist, Trevor and his ability to demonstrate some of what life is like when there is not enough money in a very loving family. It offers a glimpse into someone else’s reality. Good suggestion for any middle school student.
