I really enjoyed this series. The three main characters are strong women trying to balance a demanding job with complicated personal lives. Although it is staged as a police procedural, it is equally a Bildungsroman dedicated to the complexities of working women's lives, temptations, power, and fidelity. Both Scott and Bailey change greatly over the course of the first season.
I found it especially enjoyable because the actors avoid the usual BBC problem of mush-mouth mumbling. The dialog was clear and surprisingly devoid of slang.
