I borrowed this book after hearing the lead researcher/author give a talk on a podcast. I am impressed with his depth of knowledge around metabolism, fat loss, and interval training. However, where the book falls short is when he goes outside his realm of expertise. Firstly, he gives nutrition and lifestyle advice (stress management, sleep, etc.) that seems less well-vetted than his exercise knowledge. There are more grand statements without as much evidence, a sure sign of dogma hiding in the guise of science. It doesn't mean that it's BAD advice, I'm just not sure he's giving the nuanced opinion of a true expert in these topics. He is also not an expert in helping people make lifestyle changes, and while there is a clear plan laid out, there is no troubleshooting for helpling someone adopt that plan. And this, after all, is the real challenge of lasting change. You can tell someone to eat whole foods, but do they know how to cook them? Do they feel competent at the grocery store? Are they mired in emotional and psychological issues that make eating more complicated? The author does not try to solve these dilemmas, which is perhaps good as it is not his area of study. However, without support for such challenges and other habits like them, I think it would be difficult for many to make use of the information included.
