This is a solid YA novel that shows promise for complex world-building and character development. The switching perspectives between Laia and Elias keeps the story moving along smoothly and provides interesting insights. Unfortunately, it's clear which characters the author spent time fleshing out and which ones she simply used a cookie-cutter mold for. The antagonists seem to be evil just for the sake of being evil or wanting power. Some of the minor characters the author wants you to care deeply for are only briefly mentioned which leaves you wondering why you should be concerned if they are in peril. With three more books in the series, I think it will be worth further reading but it has yet to cement itself as a stand-out series in my mind.
