Lee returns to the story of sisters Pearl and May from her novel “Shanghai Girls” and introduces Pearl’s strong willed nineteen year old daughter Joy. This beautifully crafted novel takes place during China’s tumultuous Cultural Revolution. Joy who was born in California returns to China to find her birth father. She falls in love with a native Chinese man and is living in a commune in rural China. Pearl journeys to China to find her daughter to convince her to return to the United States. See crafts a compelling picture of the struggles of the Chinese people during this difficult time in their history. The bond of family love and sacrifices that a mother will undertake for her daughter are woven into this compelling tale. Appeal factors are strong character development and compelling historical details make this an excellent read.
