The Catskills

Its History and How It Changed America

THE BORSCHT BELT ! THE SOUR CREAM SIERRAS! The birthplace of Danny Kaye, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Moss Hart, and a thousand other immortals! A pity Joey Adams`s book is no longer in print and is hard to find. An entertainer/storyteller par excellent, he was there, he lived it, and his is still the best! From the trumpet player he coaxed into climbing up a tall tree to play the haunting INDIAN LOVE CALL for candoodling couples (with a foul curse and a blood-curdling scream, the trumpeter fell out of the tree, rather spoiling the mood), to the social director who nearly got chopped to toomler burgers when he inadvertently started 'romancing' the girlfriend of one of Organized Crime's top whack men (only the timely floating to the surface of Neversink Lake of some of his handy work kept the hot-tempered psychotic from following through), it`s a zany, no-holds-barred look at the beginning of some of the greatest entertainers, playwrights, composers, etc of all time (along with a few stories about over zealous "Shirleys" and "Charlottes" a few of these folks might want to forget! The forced dancing with these females - and their aggressive groping - is the reason playwright Moss Hart said he luxuriated in the joy of sitting down for the rest of his life! UPDATE: GOD BLESS THE ST. LOUIS CITY LIBRARY! They DO Have Joey Adams`s THE BORSCHT BELT! Along with a whole slew of other of his books! ENJOY!
