The True Flag
The True Flag Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and the Birth of American Empire By Kinzer, Stephen Book - 2017

Christendom is "a majestic matron in flowing robes drenched with blood."
Very insightful and (sadly) very relevant book about the dawn of the American empire, which was kicked off by the Spanish-American War and our possession of Cuba, the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii (which was unrelated to the war). Kinzer concentrates on the larger than life figures involved in the debate over America's character and its future, including Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, William Randolph Hearst, William Jennings Bryan, and Henry Cabot Lodge. For more on the topic, I'd suggest "The Imperial Cruise," Sarah Vowell's "Unusual Fishes," and "The War Lovers."
