This narrative focuses on John Rankin, a white minister and abolitionist who lived in Ripley, Ohio, the same small town as Parker. The writing, literary non-fiction that's exactingly detailed, is thrilling. Parker and Rankin worked together, but Rankin commanded a national spotlight for his outspoken views, and Parker worked in secrecy. Harriet Beecher Stowe once visited Rankin. His house was on a high hill above the river, and he always hung a lantern in the window when it was safe for fugitives to approach. It could been seen far into the woods of Kentucky. When Stowe was visiting, a woman escaped with her two-year-old daughter by leaping from ice floe to ice flow across the thawing river in winter. Her story inspired Stowe to create the character Eliza in Uncle Tom's Cabin, which was published in 1852, just two years after the Fugitive Slave Act, and which of course became a bestseller and greatly influenced the public's views against slavery. Rankin himself had many adventures and mobilized his sons with both scripture and shotguns to aid runaways. I can't get enough of this book. Show less

His story, dictated to a news reporter in the 1880s, was lost for years in Duke University's archives. Rediscovered about twenty years ago, it became an academic and historic treasure, telling the story of how John Parker risked his own life, dozens of times, going across the Ohio River into the slave territory of Kentucky to bring approximately 300 people to freedom. He was a blacksmith and inventor, too. He was able to send his six children, just one generation away from slavery, to college, and they all became teachers, except for one who became an attorney. His three daughters were music teachers. Show less
